When Does Your Child Need Occupational Therapy?

A child's occupation is play and school. The following list describes some of the problem areas that can affect a child's ability to play or participate at school:
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills
  • Problems with writing, reading, spelling
  • Poor coordination or clumsiness
  • Falls frequently
  • Avoids playground structures
  • Difficulty with dressing or feeding skills
  • High or low arousal levels
  • High or low sensitivity to movement, touch, sounds, visual input
  • Irrational fears
  • Limited social skills
  • Inability to focus or pay attention
  • Difficulty transitioning between activities
  • Decreased self esteem

Pediatric OT's assist parents and their children in the following ways:

  • Establishment or restoration of a skill that has not yet developed, is impaired, or has declined
  • Address underlying factors impacting fine motor and visual motor skills
  • Enhance sensory processing skills necessary for a child to be successful on the playground, at school, and with daily life skills
  • Provides therapy in a non-threatening manner utilizing techniques that are disguised in play-like activities to target problem areas

OT's strive to enhance a child's social and family roles over their lifespan by:

  • Retention and enhancement of a skill without which performance in everyday life activities would decline
  • Providing modification or adaptation of a task or the environment to achieve maximal independence and to enhance quality of life
What is Sensory Integration?
  • Ability to take information in from our senses (tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, visual, auditory), organize it, and respond appropriately
  • Disruption in a child's ability to integrate sensory input leads to difficulty adapting to environmental demands, resulting in problems with daily activities at home and school
  • Children's neuroplastic brains respond to selective and guided sensory stimuli provided by a therapist trained in sensory integration methods
  • Therapeutic intervention looks like play, but is designed to retrain a child's brain to correctly process sensory information
